Green Coffee Buyer

Job Description

We are looking for a knowledgeable and commercially minded Green Coffee Buyer to manage the sourcing and purchasing of high-quality coffee beans for our coffee shop. The successful candidate will combine strong supplier relationships, market awareness, coffee knowledge, and careful quality assessment to ensure a consistent and distinctive coffee offering.

Responsibilities

• Source and evaluate green coffee beans from reputable producers, exporters, importers, and suppliers.
• Assess coffee quality through cupping, sensory evaluation, and sample analysis.
• Monitor coffee markets, crop conditions, availability, pricing, and seasonal changes.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with coffee producers, suppliers, and import partners.
• Negotiate pricing, contracts, delivery schedules, and purchasing terms.
• Coordinate green coffee purchasing to maintain appropriate stock levels.
• Work closely with roasting and coffee preparation teams to match purchased coffees with quality and flavour requirements.
• Maintain accurate purchasing records, supplier information, contracts, and inventory data.
• Track shipment schedules and collaborate with suppliers to resolve delivery or quality issues.
• Research emerging coffee origins, varieties, processing methods, and producers.
• Support responsible sourcing practices and promote transparency throughout the supply chain.
• Review supplier performance and identify opportunities to improve quality, value, and reliability.
• Prepare purchasing reports and provide recommendations based on market and operational data.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional qualification in business, supply chain management, agriculture, food science, coffee studies, or a related field.
• Previous experience in coffee buying, green coffee sourcing, procurement, or a closely related role.
• Strong knowledge of coffee origins, varieties, processing methods, grading, and quality characteristics.
• Practical experience with coffee cupping and sensory evaluation.
• Strong negotiation, supplier management, and commercial decision-making skills.
• Good understanding of inventory planning, purchasing processes, and supply chain coordination.
• Excellent communication and relationship-building abilities.
• Strong analytical and organisational skills with careful attention to detail.
• Ability to evaluate quality and cost when making purchasing decisions.
• Familiarity with international coffee markets and responsible sourcing practices is an advantage.
• Relevant coffee certifications or professional training are desirable.
• Proficiency with spreadsheets, purchasing systems, and standard business software.
• Ability to work effectively with roasting, operations, finance, and coffee service teams.
